Concho Valley Tennis Association (CVTA) is a non - profit community tennis association committed to providing affordable tennis lessons to children of at least 7 years of age and adults in the surrounding area. Mission Accomplished! Tennis Center Is NOW Open!
CVTA, the advocate for a new tennis facility, celebrated a dream come true on July 27 with the opening of the new tennis facility next to the football stadium on Knickerbocker. The 8-court facility has been funded by $674,000 in half-cent sales tax dollars, a generous donation of $132,000 for lights from the San Angelo Health Foundation, and a contribution of $52,600 from CVTA raised from fund-raising promotions since 1993.
Although the City of San Angelo has overseen the funding for the tennis center, SAISD will manage the facility. Since 2002, CVTA has partnered with SAISD, operating tennis lessons at the Central courts and the new facility. Therefore, CVTA has created a schedule to consider school tennis events but is also sensitive to the public by scheduling classes to allow as many open courts for the public throughout the week. Refer to the Court Schedule menu button.
During school hours, two courts will be reserved for the public. After 5 p.m. CVTA will offer classes Monday-Thursday, plus evening socials called First Friday Fun and Second Saturday Social. Junior grand prix and adult tournaments will be scheduled throughout the year. Courts will also be reserved for USTA Zone Advancement Tournaments (ZATs) in October and November.
CVTA Programs
CVTA continues to offer the USTA National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) instructional program to juniors that includes the USTA's beginner program called QuickStart Tennis. On Mondays 6-7:30 the beginner program is available to participants from ages 7-18. For ages 7-10, a smaller court size and smaller racket, plus a lowered net and low compression ball, will allow a quick start to success on the court. A modified scoring system of seven points also allows a quick progression to game play during the first lesson. Beginners who are 11 and up are also scheduled on Mondays.
Tuesdays are scheduled for the intermediate/advanced junior who plays USTA tournaments or competes on a school team. Two sessions are offered: 5:30-7 p.m. or 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Tuesday night students are invited to participate in an exciting year-round program that was introduced in 2008 called Junior Development. The two-hour program involves 20-minute match play for students and USTA adult league players. The cost is only a can of new balls or $2. If juniors have a conflict on Tuesday nights for the intermediate/advance class, the cost for Junior Development is $20 for each session. Just download the registration form to register!
Due to popular demand, a beginning adult class will be offered on Wednesdays 6-7:30.
The CVTA board is committed to offering affordable tennis instruction. The regular sessions are $35 for nine hours of instruction during a six-week period. FREE insurance is also included in the junior program fee.
In addition to five six-weeks instructional sessions, CVTA also offers offer a four-week summer day camp in June and July and a three-week camp in August. The cost is $60 each month in June and July and $45 for August.
Charles Williams' Resignation - Statement from CVTA Board
On behalf of the Concho Valley Tennis Association Board of Directors, we have officially accepted the resignation of Charles Williams as a tennis instructor.
Our board has the utmost respect for Coach Williams as a tennis instructor because of his leadership and commitment to not only CVTA but to the entire tennis community. During his tenure at CVTA, we have never received a complaint regarding any type of inappropriate behavior. All comments have been positive regarding his role as a tennis instructor.
Our board, along with other tennis leaders in San Angelo who are aware of his resignation from CVTA, agree that we have only observed positive experiences. His absence from CVTA and other programs in San Angelo will be a huge void in the Concho Valley.
